Many of us want to have more energy, look fit, and improve our overall health at some point. The promises of "detoxification" and weight loss that come from juices, cleanses, detoxing regimes and wellness programs can be very appealing. They make it sound easy to reach all your wellness goals if you can just commit to their program for x number of days. But before you embark on your slim down plan, lets look at some of the most popular weight loss recommendations.  The truth may lead you to choose an alternative path.

Looking at the claims:

1. Juices can cleanse and purify you.  Sadly, not true.  It doesn't matter how green, how organic, how many powders or potions your juice/smoothie/lemon apple cider drink contains, it will not remove the host of toxins from your body that it claims.  Your kidneys and liver however, will do that for you.  That's their job and they do it masterfully.  And in true cases of pesticide or heavy metal buildups for example, you would become very sick. So sick that you would need to go to the emergency room, not to the spa juice bar. These types of poisonings can seriously damage your liver and require very specific medical treatments.

2. Colon cleanses and hydrotherapy.  While it may seem like the most practical part of the body to rid toxins from, you are actually only forcefully interrupting the natural expulsion of waste.  Colon cleanses only remove existing fecal matter.  They do not remove chemicals that are in the body at a cellular level.  Unless medically necessitated, doing so is unnecessary and can actually put you at risk for complications such as bowel perforation.

3. Revving your metabolism.  Increasing your metabolism is something that can be achieved - with increased muscle mass, increased physical activity, a healthy thyroid, and enough sleep for example.  There is even evidence to support that spicy foods can encourage an increase in metabolism.  That being said, the weight loss seen from detox/cleanse drinks such as a mixture of lemon, maple syrup and cayenne pepper, comes from the sheer lack of calories that are being consumed while on the cleanse, and not from the ingredients of the drink.  It is also a short lived weight loss as much of it comes from a dramatic loss of water weight, and once your normal diet is resumed, this weight will slowly be regained.

4. Altering the pH of your body. Changing the pH of the body is not something that happens easily.  Human blood has a very specific pH of 7.4. Even a change of pH to 7.35 can have an impact on your health. Various forms of acidosis are quite serious and damaging and so the lungs and kidneys work very hard to prevent any changes in pH from happening. All nutrients are circulated through the blood stream and are therefore filtered by the kidneys to keep this balance in check.  Unless you are eating in a very unhealthy way (long term very high fat, no carb diet), or are ill with other issues, you are unlikely to ever experience acidosis.  Therefore following an alkaline diet is unnecessary.  You would be trying to do the work your body is already doing for you.  The weight loss that is promised from this diet has to do with the restriction of alcohol, wheat, dairy, meat, fish, shellfish and sugar - not from the pH it promises to promote.

So what does one do to lose weight then?

Strategies such as including protein at meals and snacks, increasing your fibre intake, and decreasing processed foods, can help to get you feeling energised and shed unwanted pounds. Mindful healthy eating has the added bonus of not relying on willpower for success, but instead includes enjoying foods you love and allowing for the things that bring us pleasure. New research looks at meal timings with circadian rhythms and intermittent fasting to achieve weight loss. There are many different ways to approach this goal; a dietitian can help to pinpoint the most effective changes that will have you seeing results for your efforts.

The low FODMAP diet is a relatively new dietary approach used to minimize the symptoms of IBS. Research has shown it to be effective in reducing the symptoms of IBS in 3 out of 4 individuals. Symptoms such as:

·      Abdominal pain and discomfort
·      Bloating
·      Wind
·      Altered bowel habits (diarrhoea/constipation or combination of both)

A low FODMAP diet is a diet which is low in Fermentable Oligo, Di, Mono-saccharides and Polyols. These are types of carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and move to the large intestine where they absorb water and are fermented by bacteria. Studies have shown that these mechanisms exacerbate the symptoms of IBS and that reducing FODMAPs improves symptom control in the majority of IBS sufferers.

FODMAPs are found in specific dairy products, grains and fruits and vegetables.

A low FODMAP diet plan works by cutting out foods high in such FODMAPs for 6-8 weeks. Foods are then gradually reintroduced and symptoms monitored through the guidance of a registered dietitian.

The low FODMAP diet is specifically designed to be carried out under the supervision of a dietitian as, for optimum effectiveness, each diet is individualized based on the patient’s symptoms and taking in to consideration their current diet.

A dietitian will also ensure that the diet is nutritionally adequate whilst carrying out the plan.
