Obstetrics is the care of pregnant women and includes the care of the unborn baby.
A comprehensive health assessment of the mother is made and a detailed medical and reproductive history is taken.
A physical examination is followed by blood testing.
Screening for major fetal abnormalities is accompanied by detailed counselling so couples can make informed decisions about their care.
Close monitoring of the condition of the mother and the baby is undertaken throughout pregnancy.
Towards the end of the pregnancy we encourage the prospective parent(s) to produce a ‘birth plan’ so that their wishes are known and can be discussed in detail before the birth.
Care in labour is important the chosen obstetrician will usually attend the delivery. In the rare case of unavailability cover will be arranged.
We encourage all parents to meet both our obstetricians prior to labour.
Postnatal support, advice on breast feeding and advice on return to normal activities will be provided.
